HORMONES

Bio-Identical Hormone Therapy
Many women experience issues as they age and decide they “just need to deal with it” and that it’s an inevitable part of aging. However, this simply is not true. The reality is that many of these issues – such as hot flashes, night sweats, mood swings, poor sleep, loss of sex drive, weight gain and depression – are associated with hormonal changes that can be treated effectively using natural methods.
Dr. Maddox is an expert in the field of bio-identical hormone replacement therapy – which focuses on providing hormones that are identical to those normally produced by the human body. Unlike synthetic hormones, bio-identical hormones are derived from natural sources such as the wild yam.
Bio-identical hormones are a hot topic nationally, with many women finding they feel younger, more energetic, happier, and balanced both physically and emotionally. Watch actress Suzanne Somers speak about her experience and read some frequently asked questions.
What are bioidentical hormones?
Bioidentical hormone replacement therapy (BHRT) is the treatment of hormone deficiencies using hormones that are identical to the hormones normally produced by the human body. In contrast to synthetic hormones bioidentical hormones are commonly taken from natural sources such as the wild yam.
Creating the balance.
At your first appointment you will meet with Dr. Adam Maddox, our medical director and age management physician. We will gather the information needed to identify the cause(s) of your current issues. After we have completed your health history exam Dr. Maddox will make recommendations on laboratory tests needed to provide vital information on your hormone levels. Laboratory testing may consist of saliva, blood, and/or urine. Following the completion of laboratory testing we will prepare an individualized treatment plan based on your personal needs. It may consist of BHRT, nutritional supplements, exercise, lifestyle/stress management, and nutrition.
Maintaining the balance
Your first follow up appointment will occur approximately 6 weeks after starting Dr. Maddox’s treatment recommendations. At this time we may adjustment the prescription based on your follow up laboratory levels and current symptoms. Most patients experience improvement within the first 6 weeks but continue to report positive results for years after starting treatment.
Bioidentical hormone therapy treatment options
Dr. Maddox has found that patients respond best to BHRT when taken in these forms.
Hormone Pellet Implant - About the size of a grain of rice, these small pellets are placed just under the skin near the hip. Practically a pain free procedure most of our patients elect this over other methods simply because of convenience. In about 30 minutes the pellets can be placed and last between 4-6 months. Just one less thing for you to remember to take.
Hormone Creams & Gels - Creams and gels are directly applied to the skin. Typically the inside of the elbows, backs of the knees, inner thighs, and directly to the vaginal walls. Applied 1-2/day the creams and gels are directly absorbed through the skin into the blood stream completely avoiding the digestive tract. Some evidence has shown that giving sex hormones orally can change their metabolism and potentially lead to harmful side effects.
Oral & Sublingual - Dr. Maddox primarily reserves this form of administration to progesterone, thyroid medication, DHEA, and adrenal medication. Oral administration is the main route nutritional supplementation will be given.
Injection - At Thrive hormone injections are typically reserved for male patients undergoing testosterone replacement for andropause (male menopause). Vitamin injection therapy may be recommended as a part of your treatment plan and can be discussed with Dr. Maddox.

Testosterone Replacement
Similar to women men experience a hormone decline. Known as andropause, men’s testosterone levels start to decline by the age of 30 making daily life a struggle. Testosterone levels usually peak between the ages of 18-25 then gradually decline at a rate of approximately 1% per year thereafter.
Unlike menopause symptoms of andropause are more subtle. An increase in daytime fatigue and decreased sexual interest are usually the first signs. Most men rationalize that stress and mid-life pressures are the cause. This is simply denial. With healthy levels of testosterone the body becomes strong again. Building lean muscle while metabolizing fat and supporting healthy cardiac and brain function. Symptoms of andropause include: Weight gain, Fatigue, Muscle loss, Depression, Memory loss, Decreased drive for life, Erectile dysfunction, Decreased sex drive, and Irritability.
Our medical director and age management specialist Dr. Adam Maddox has dedicated his medical career to andropause and menopause patients. During your visit Dr. Maddox will take a detailed medical history of your current state of health. During the same visit a blood sample will be taken to check your current testosterone levels. Upon the completion of your laboratory testing Dr. Maddox will discuss your test results and design a treatment plan for your specific needs. Your customized treatment plan may consist of the integration of hormone replacement, nutrition, exercise and nutritional supplements.
How much does it cost?
The cost varies from person to person. Because the treatment plan is customized we are unable to give you an exact cost without you meeting with the doctor first.
Does insurance cover andropause treatment?
Generally insurance companies do not cover this type of treatment because it is considered preventative and/or elective (not medically necessary). Although we have had some patients submit a claim to their insurance company and receive full or partial reimbursement. Payment is do in full at time of visit but we are happy to provide you with the appropriate information to submit to your insurance provider upon request.
Can I have blood or lab work done with my primary care physician?
Yes. We recommend you meet with Dr. Maddox first to discuss the labs you will need. At this time we will provide you with a list of lab test needed to accurately diagnosis your hormone status.
Is a prostate exam and testing required before starting testosterone replacement?
Yes. We require a manual prostate exam performed within the past 6 months. We recommend scheduling the exam with your primary care physician prior to your second appointment or before starting treatment with us.

Human Growth Hormone
In recent years human growth hormone has become very popular among people seeking treatments to slow or reverse aging. Although not exactly the “fountain of youth” HGH therapy can have profound benefits.
Produced in the brain by the pituitary gland growth hormone stimulates growth and cell reproduction. Levels peak during puberty, then gradually decline after the age of 30. Growth hormone is needed for normal growth in children. In adults, growth hormone is needed to maintain the proper amounts of body fat, muscle, and bone density. Decreased growth hormone levels can also contribute to fatigue and lack of motivation.
The following symptoms may be due to HGH deficiency:
- General Health : Reduced energy/easily fatigued, Poor Sleep, Absence of "Well-Being"
- Immune System : Chronic Pain, Weakened immune system/Susceptibility to Illness
- Muscle Health : Decreased Muscle Mass, Decreased Muscle Strength, Increased Body Fat
