Bio-identical Hormones
Everyday our body produces chemical substances, called hormones, that regulate our body's functions. Each hormone has a specific role. For example testosterone is found in both men and women but much more in men. Testosterone is responsible for hair growth, muscle mass, and deep voices to name a few. Without this hormone men wouldn't be men. Estrogen is also found in both men and women. Estrogen is considered the female hormone because it is found in higher concentrations in females. It is responsible for many female characteristics including breast development, skin texture, and menstrual cycles. These and other hormones throughout the body are in constant balance with one another to maintain a healthy, happy person. When any of these hormones are out of balance chaos strikes. After the results have been determined Dr. Maddox will design a individual treatment program for your needs. It is important to note that Dr. Maddox does not use blanket or general treatments for every patient and that each program is unique in that it is tailored to the patient's individual goals. If you require hormone replacement Dr. Maddox will prescribe a bio-identical (bio-logically identical) hormones or a combination of hormones from one of several compounding pharmacies in the United States (some are local in Portland).
What is andropause?
By the time men reach their mid-late 40's testosterone is down about 40% from peak levels and is having a major impact on sex drive, stamina, lean body mass, energy levels, and brain function. Like women going through the hormonal decline of menopause men also experience a decline in testosterone. This aging process is called andropause.
What if I don't keep my hormones in balance?
Hormone balance is essential for healthy bodily function. Remember you cannot survive without hormones. Hormone deficiency and/or imbalance has been linked to serious diseases including: cancer, heart disease, stroke, diabetes, osteoporosis, premature aging, depression, Parkinson's Disease, Alzheimer's disease and much more.
What is a bio-identical hormone replacement (BHRT) vs. conventional hormone replacement (HRT)?
Bio-identical hormones are biologically identical to those that our body's naturally produce. Conventional hormones are synthetic and are not identical to the hormones that naturally exist in the body. Synthetic hormones work by mimicking native hormonal activity.
Bio-identical hormones are typically derived from natural sources such as plants. Synthetic or conventional HRT can be produced from an number of sources. For example some synthetic estrogens are made from pregnant mares urine that is collected then processed through an number of chemical reactions.
Are bio-identical hormones (BHRT) safe?
Although there has not been a long term clinical trail to date, there is a tremendous amount of information regarding their physiologic role in the body and a growing number of independent studies that support the safety of BHRT.
What is a compounding pharmacy?
Similar to a standard pharmacy, compounding pharmacies dispense medications. In addition to standard medications, compounding pharmacies specialize in specially formulated products that are prescribed by a physician. For example if patient A needed estrogen, progesterone, and testosterone and patient B need just progesterone, the compounding pharmacy can mix (or compound) the medicines in a specific dose and in any type of delivery method. This allows for individual treatments to be rendered precisely as the patients needs require. Therefore there is no one-size-fits-all approach to treatment.
Does insurance cover bio-identical hormone replacement?
Due to the large number of insurance plans we cannot guarantee that your insurance company will cover the prescription. We always recommend that you contact your insurance provider to review your policies coverage and limitations.
How much does it cost?
It is difficult to give an exact cost without knowing the prescription you will need. The price range compares favorably with other hormonal treatments and in some cases can even be less.
