For many of us, the term chemical peel immediately conjures up images from Sex and the City: Samantha Jones, red face hiding behind a veil at an uptown party. They’re no longer all that drastic, however, and the products at Thrive can produce beautifying results without grisly side effects. By penetrating various depths of skin, our chemical peels are among the most effective non-invasive beauty treatments available today.
All chemical peels vary in intensity and strength. Chemical peels have incredible regenerating properties; by removing damaged layers of skin, they strip away years of age and allow the skin to grow back healthier and more vibrant. The strength of the peels depends on the chemical ingredients and the level of rejuvenation you need. Even our strongest products, however, have minimal side effects. Our chemical peels can accomplish everything from wrinkle reduction to removing brown spots and sun damage. The best product for you will depend on your specific goals and the current condition of your skin.
The Vitalize Peel is our most popular chemical peel product. It combats normal environmental damage, and it can be customized to treat irregular pigmentation, photodamage, and melasma. As a middle grade peel, it’s effective without being debilitating. Burning is minimal, and a recovery period is usually unnecessary.
The Rejuvenize Peel goes a step further, penetrating deeper to exfoliate the top layers of the most damaged skin. By using a novel surfactant, this product creates a more uniform peeling without the irritation that once characterized stronger peels. Because it can heal even acne scarring, some recovery time may be necessary, but it’s tolerable.
Though most chemical peels produce some level of discomfort, they can make the face look and feel younger than almost any other procedure. To learn more about them and determine the best product for you, contact Thrive today and set up a consultation with our expert staff.
Acne usually begins in puberty and is often seen as a teenager’s problem but blemishes follow many people into adulthood, despite our best efforts at eradicating them. If you want to keep your skin looking its best, here are four tips for self-care.
Always Remove Makeup Before Going to Bed Use a gentle cleanser or makeup remover wipes to completely clean off any and all products you may have applied during the day. Dust and other environmental particulates will have stuck to the fine layer you’ve applied, and sleeping with all that on your skin is a surefire way to not only ruin your pillowcases, but clog pores and wreak havoc on your skin. SkinMedica has a wonderful line of skin cleansers that are gentle and effective, http://www.skinmedica.com/skin-care-products/cleanse
Know What’s in Your Facial Products Many products, including makeup and cleansers, contain preservatives or chemicals that may actually irritate your skin. It is important to understand your skin type in order to purchase products that appeal to either dry, oily, or combination skin. If you have sensitive skin, avoid ingredients like titanium oxide and sulfates, which can cause irritation and lead to breakouts.
Keep Your Hands off Your Face Oil from your fingers can make acne worse, so do your best to avoid popping or picking at blemishes. Instead, apply an ice cube to reduce redness and a warm compress to draw the fluid closer to the surface, then gently wipe the area with an alcohol swab. If you want to cover your blemishes with makeup, be sure to use non-comedogenic (won’t clog pores) formulas and remove it completely at the end of the day.
Your Skin Reflects Your Diet What you put in your mouth can have a direct affect on the health and appearance of your skin. Eating fatty and oily foods void of nutritional value can leave the skin broken out and dull. Foods high in anti-oxidants include blackberries, blueberries, strawberries, and plums. Salmon, walnuts, and flax seed have essential fatty acids to lead to plump, glowing skin. Don’t forget drink lots of water to keep your skin and body hydrated!

Between traveling, parties, end-of-year obligations at work, holidays, and the kids being home on break, December can be a very stressful month. Take a minute to breathe deeply, reflect on the positive parts of all these events, and try these five stress-reducing tips.
Exercise Who has time to fit in a workout between everything else going on? You do. Take five minutes at your desk to do some yoga. If you take the bus or train to work, get off one or two stops before you usually do and walk the rest of the way, and do the same on the way home. According to Neilson data, the average American watches four hours of television per day; use commercial breaks to do lunges, sit-ups, push-ups, and leg lifts in rotation.
Delegate You do not have to do everything yourself. If a houseguest or family member asks, “is there anything I can do to help,” fight the urge to say no. Of course there’s something they can do! Dry the dishes, chop some veggies, take a bag to the trash, or make sure the dog’s water bowl is full. The list of chores we do every day, from large to small, is endless. If no one is offering, because you are just so competent at everything, making it look effortless, ask for help. There is no shame in asking, and your needs are just as important as everyone else’s.
Meditate In less time than it takes your coworker to have a cigarette break, you can meditate. Take 90 seconds to go to The Quiet Place (a version for iPhones is available, too). Let your breathing fall in time to the music. Shut everything out of your mind. Focus on lowering your heart rate, letting your shoulders drop, and just being for a little while.
Self-care We all know that water and sleep and balanced diets help keep us feeling and looking our very best. These details, however, tend to fall by the wayside in times of great stress. Even if doing so means putting a task off until tomorrow, be sure to get the right amount of sleep for your body. Keep a water bottle at your desk and take regular water-and-stretch breaks. Keep high-protein snacks like trail mix and energy bars in your purse and car to avoid falling into the fast-food trap.
Laugh Laughter activates pleasure centers in the brain, releasing feel-good hormones like oxytocin and serotonin, thereby lowering heart rate and stress hormones like adrenalin and cortisol. Find three things to laugh about (even – or especially – if they’re just silly cat macros) for every one that stresses you, and soon you’ll feel much better.
When you’ve started feeling less stressed and want to look as good as you feel, Dr. Maddox and his team at Thrive Portland provide a number of services to help you achieve that goal.

Light treatments can treat redness, scars, wrinkles, pore size, and current acne. It uses therapeutic light to kill acne and the bacteria that causes it. Laser treatments stimulate the skin and offer a faster alternative to peels. Lasers work by essentially burning the top layers of skin to a precise depth. The skin then heals replacing the burned layers with newer appearing skin.
Summer is coming to an end and the Fall/Winter weather is on its way. With that come the cold, wind, and dryness that can wreak havoc on our skin. For many people, the weather not only causes extra dryness but can also cause flaking, cracking, and even eczema.
At Thrive, our skin specialists recommend things that can alleviate the discomfort of dry skin and help you achieve beautifully hydrated and glowing skin…even in the cold of winter!
Moisturize
The single greatest weapon in your fight against winter dryness is moisturizer. Investing in a quality moisturizer will hydrate and replenish the skin and prevent winter dryness. We recommend a few products to our patients for a day and nighttime moisturizer.
In the winter, when it’s cloudy and gray, it’s easy to forget that we can still get sun damage. For daytime, we recommend TNS Ultimate Daily Moisture with SPF. It provides full spectrum UVA and UVB protection as well as protecting against environmental damage.
At night, use a rich night cream that will repair and re-hydrate your skin overnight. A product like SkinMedica’s Dermal Repair Cream has high levels of vitamin C and E that will do just that.
Integrating a serum into your daily skin regimen provides an extra layer of protection and hydration. A product like SkinMedica’s TNS Essential Serum provides seven antioxidants that fight free radical damage, protect the skin, and improve the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. In addition, the Alpha arbutin in the serum actually brightens the skin which is an added boost in the winter.
Keep in mind that the best time to apply moisturizer is right after you get out of the shower. Your skin will absorb more of the moisturizer when your skin is still damp and your pores are more open.
Hydrate, Hydrate, Hydrate
We always recommend drinking 6-8 8 ounce glasses of water per day but this will also benefit your skin in the winter. Hydrating from the inside out is just as important if not more than hydrating with a topical moisturizer.
Eat a Diet Rich in Fruits and Vegetables
Eating a diet full of hydrating fruits and vegetables will hydrate your skin. Cucumbers contain vitamin C and caffeic acid, both of which help hydrate and soothe the skin. Zucchini is 95 percent water by weight and one of the most hydrating vegetables you can eat. A serving has less than 25 calories and is an excellent source of folate, potassium, and vitamins A and C. Bell peppers, romaine lettuce, carrots, celery and other vegetables also contain antioxidants and amino acids that will improve your skin from the inside out.
Melon is 90 percent water and has just 56 calories per cup. One cup of cantaloupe also provides 103.2 percent of the daily value for vitamin A, an essential for healthy skin. Pineapple is packed with bromelain, a mixture of compounds with potent anti-inflammatory powers. Mango, apples, and grapefruit also contain beneficial vitamins that are good for hydrating and rejuvenating the skin.
At Thrive, we specialize in holistic skin care that leads to healthy glowing skin from the inside out. For concerns that cannot be addressed with diet or products, we also offer skin treatments including light based tightening solutions, chemical peels, laser treatments, and wrinkle reduction procedures. Call us today at 503-241-3579 to book your free consultation at our NW Aesthetic and Anti-Aging Center.
Congratulations to Melissa H., winner of our Spring Into Beauty contest! Her prize of a $650 complete skin rejuvenation package includes a skin evaluation and treatment plan, microdermabrasion, Vitalize facial peel and Botox. Melissa’s entry stood out as a personal and eloquent statement of what aging beautifully means to her.
Aging beautifully means two very important things to me. The first is that I will develop inner beauty each year that goes by as I give myself fully to life and to love. The second is taking care of my body and my health and yes, my physical appearance the best I can.
To me, aging beautifully means overcoming life’s difficulties and learning how to maintain an inner smile. It means not giving way to bitterness, and remaining flexible and resilient over time when it would be easy to grow set in my ways. It means keeping my body healthy by eating good food and exercising often. And It means realizing that I am never too old to learn new things and challenge my mind with advancements in science and technology and art. When I am older I want to be a woman of wisdom and grace. I want the things I have suffered and the things I have enjoyed shine through my eyes, and I want to offer the things I have learned to those who are younger, but only when they need it.
When I think of aging I am also happy that it no longer means I will have to sit back and passively watch my outer appearance deteriorate. I don’t want my reflection to surprise me when I look in the mirror. I will know a young girl still occupies my aging body, but aging beautifully can now mean less of a discrepancy between how I look and how I feel. It is true that beauty is only skin deep. I have always been taught this truth, and still believe it to this day. But now, when the lines between my eyebrows give me an angry look, I can easily take care of it. When my gravity pulls the corners of my mouth downward and I look unhappy, I can give it a boost and reflect the joyful spirit I used to express so easily. Aging beautifully will never mean erasing every smile line, or looking like a piece of stretched out plastic. But it can mean that along with maintaining my inner self as a loving and graceful human being, I can feel good about my outer appearance too.
Thank you to everyone who entered our Thrive Spring Into Beauty contest! We had so many great entries, it was difficult to pick just one winner. Become a fan of Thrive on Facebook and stay tuned for information on upcoming contests and discounts.
