Get the Skinny on LipoDissolve

3 May 2012, thriveportland on the topic of Lipo Dissolve Portland, Lipodissolve Portland, Portland Medspa

We’ve written before about the weight loss alternatives offered at Thrive, but LipoDissolve receives a lot of press coverage. For all its popularity it deserves more attention than one short paragraph in a blog post. As swimsuit season approaches and the limitations of diet and exercise become more apparent, many of our patients want to know about the treatment. Since it emerged as an alternative to liposuction, patients, bloggers, and doctors have begun researching LipoDissolve for themselves. If you have small stubborn fat stores you want to shed before summer, LippoDissolve may be right for you, but it’s good to know the facts first.

“Dissolving” Fat
Contrary to its name, the treatment doesn’t actually dissolve fat. Through a series of microinjections, doctors precisely target small fat stores with a unique chemical compound. The actual ingredients will vary, but most consist of natural enzymes, multivitamins, and phosphatidylcholine—which is used as an FDA-approved treatment for breaking down blood fats. Instead of “dissolving” fat stores, the injections will kill fat cells, which the body then naturally flushes out.

Benefits
Because LipoDissolve isn’t actually surgery, it doesn’t require the downtime of liposuction. Some patients have noticed swelling and mild to moderate discomfort which is commonly relieved by Tylenol. The precise targeting of the injections can eliminate fat in areas like the chin where treating with liposuction isn’t always the best option. Usually within three treatment sessions, patients notice results, which become more pronounced as the series of LipoDissolve treatments progress.

Risks
There have been no documented risks related to LippoDissolve treatments. Because it’s new, studies are still underway, and the FDA has not yet approved the treatment. Initial findings from the American Society for Aesthetic Surgery, though, tested and found that LipoDissolve resulted in no serious side effects. Of course, any procedure carries risk, so it’s important to undergo treatment from a board-certified physician like Dr. Maddox.

If you want to look your best this summer but fear the surgical complications of liposuction, LippoDissolve may be right for you. Contact us for a consultation today.

Hold or Cold: The Yoga That Keeps You Young

26 April 2012, thriveportland on the topic of 'Age Beautifully' Tips, Portland Medspa, Portland Weight Loss, Thrive Portland

Yoga is prolific across the whole west coast, but Portland alone has one of the highest per capita rates of studios in the nation. The practice has become one of the most popular and best-respected forms of exercise, especially among women, and that popularity has diversified yoga tremendously. In Portland there is a wide array of options, but most of them boil down to temperature. For traditionalists, cold yoga retains more of the practice’s ancient roots, but hot yoga is believed to purge toxins as it strengthens the body and mind.

Sometimes called Bikram, hot yoga is practiced in controlled temperatures that range from 95-110 degrees Fahrenheit. It uses traditional poses and yoga exercises, but practitioners find their stretches can go deeper due to the heat. The real benefit, though, is the detoxifying powers the heat has. Sweat is an integral element of hot yoga practices, and it often results in a feeling of rejuvenation during and after practice.

The risks of hot yoga are obvious. Practioners can easily become dehydrated, so they need to drink copious amounts of water before and during their practice. Some may experience temperature shock too if they leave the studio immediately in colder months. Since the internal body temperature rises so steeply, it needs time to cool back down to a normal temperature. These dangers, however, are easily prevented, and they’re insignificant when weighed against the benefits.

Because yoga is such a low contact form of exercise, the body doesn’t just exercise: it’s strengthened in stretching and poses. This has made it preferred among practitioners who want to avoid the impact of running and heavy weights. When heated, though, yoga can develop a beautifying effect by purging the body and skin through sweat. 110-degree exercises may not appeal to everyone, but they do allow the body to lose weight and age beautifully.
