Laser Fractional Resurfacing: A Fresh New Look, a Fresh New You!

25 August 2011, admin on the topic of Featured Services, Laser Fractional Resurfacing Portland, Skin Specialist Portland
Do you have age spots, acne stars, wrinkles, discoloration on your face and neck? There is a laser treatment called laser fractional resurfacing that addresses a multitude of skin problems that surface as we age.

Under the epidermis (top layer of skin) is a network of collagen and elastin, and as you age and get more sun exposure, those proteins break down, resulting in wrinkles, sagging, age spots, etc. Fractional skin resurfacing penetrates deep into the dermis to essentially wake the skin up and re-start the creation of collegen and elastin. The laser treats tiny areas, replacing old, destroyed cells with new, healthy ones. A major part of laser fractional resurfacing also has to do with the areas that the laser doesn’t touch. Because the laser is so precise, the skin that is left alone helps to heal the skin that was treated.

At Thrive, we use the SmartXide DOT CO2 Laser to treat everything from wrinkles and fine lines to age and sun spots, to discoloration, acne scars, surgical scars, and even melasma! It is a remarkable technology that is helping patients get rid of their problem areas and knock years off their appearance. Best of all, this treatment can be completed in as little as 90 minutes. There is minor discomfort and significantly less recovery time compared to traditional CO2 laser resurfacing. For the majority of patients, side effects are minimal and include slight swelling and redness.

In short, laser fractional resurfacing creates smoother, fresher, healthier and younger-looking skin, improved tone, texture and pore size, and the softening of wrinkles and lines. Sounds too good to be true right? Portland Anti-Aging Treatments: Get Your Legs Ready for Bathing Suit Weather with Leg Vein Reduction

26 May 2011, admin on the topic of Featured Services, Laser Fractional Resurfacing Portland, Skin Specialist Portland, Thrive Portland

Do you shy away from wearing shorts or skirts in the summer because of visible leg veins? Varicose and spider veins are more common than you may think. New and effective leg vein reduction treatments are a non-invasive way to get your legs looking their best.

What causes leg veins?

Most varicose and spider veins appear in the legs due to the pressure of body weight, force of gravity, and task of carrying blood from the bottom of the body up to the heart. Compared with other veins in the body, leg veins have the toughest job of carrying blood back to the heart and they endure the most pressure. Factors that can increase your risk of developing varicose or spider veins include aging, hormonal changes, pregnancy or hereditary traits.

How can you reduce leg veins?

Laser vein removal is quick, low risk and has been used for more than 30 years. The newest in laser and pulsed light technologies effectively treat leg veins by sealing off the veins and causing them to dissolve. Light energy is delivered in a series of brief pulses on a targeted area in a precise dosage. Most times these light devices are used with cool gel or chilled air to reduce any discomfort.  Treatments can last from 10 to 20 minutes and multiple treatments are usually best for optimal results.

At Thrive Aesthetic and Anti-Aging Center, our team of expert medical professionals has years of experience in leg vein reduction and use a number of innovative and safe laser-based methods. Stop by our beautiful NW location or call us at 503-241-3579 to learn how leg vein reduction can help you.

Skin Specialist Portland: What You Need to Know About Acne – Symptoms, Causes and Effective Treatments

23 March 2011, admin on the topic of Age Spot Removal Portland, Before and After Photos, Featured Services, Laser Fractional Resurfacing Portland, Naturopathic Physician Portland, Skin Specialist Portland, Thrive Portland

Nearly all of us have experienced acne at some point in our lives, in fact, it affects nearly 80% of the human population. While acne typically begins in adolescence with hormonal changes, adults can commonly experience the symptoms as well. Acne can be painful, embarrassing and even leave scarring – all of which can affect one’s self esteem. In order to better understand acne, let’s explore the causes, symptoms and effective treatments.

What is Acne?

Acne is localized skin inflammation as a result of overactive sebaceous glands at the base of hair follicles. The sebaceous glands are triggered by the hormone androgen. When this hormone level increases, the sebaceous glands release sebum or oil. This oil normally lubricates and protects the skin, but under certain circumstances, cells that are close to the openings of the oil glands, block the openings. If pores are clogged, sebum is trapped beneath the skin, causing whiteheads and blackheads.

Acne typically appears on the face, neck, chest, back and shoulders, which are the areas of skin with the largest number of functional oil glands. There are different levels of acne ranging from milder comedonal (blackheads and whiteheads) to moderate, pustular, and on to severe cystic acne. In many cases, several or all of these levels of acne can be present on an individual simultaneously.

What Causes Acne?

Acne is rarely caused by just one factor, and may include a combination of the following:

  • Hormonal changes related to menstrual periods, pregnancy, birth control pills, or stress, or natural hormone imbalances
  • Pore-clogging cosmetic and hair products
  • Certain drugs (such as steroids, testosterone, estrogen, and phenytoin)
  • Overproduction of oil (sebum)
  • Irregular shedding of dead skin cells resulting in irritation of the hair follicles of your skin
  • Overabundance of surface bacteria
  • Hereditary traits

How to Treat Acne?

There are a few different approaches to treating acne and/or acne scarring. If a patient is currently dealing with acne, our treatment plan begins with a thorough consultation to understand the root cause of the acne. From there, a number of treatments may be prescribed including topical products, light therapies, photodynamic therapies and internal hormone treatments.

Light Therapy

The use of light therapy has been shown to drastically reduce acne-causing bacteria in the pores and is safe, effective and easy. At Thrive, we use two major light therapy treatments to improve the skin and rid it of the effects of acne.

Omnilux light therapy is an FDA-approved system that uses high-intensity, narrow-band blue light for treating acne. Omnilux uses LEDs, as opposed to fluorescent tubes or bulbs and because no laser is involved, there is no heat, pain or swelling and no recovery time! Improvements to the skin are usually visible after only a few treatments.

Photodynamic Therapy

Photodynamic therapy (“PDT”) uses a unique combination of light-sensitive medication and Omnilux light therapy to affect changes in the skin surface, and help your body regenerate healthier skin. A photosensitizing topical treatment is applied to the affected area and is then exposed to light that activates its properties. This treatment reduces skin oiliness and minimizes the appearance of pore size while improving skin texture.

Once the patient’s skin is healed from current acne breakouts and breakouts have been kept at bay, the acne scarring can then be treated. If patients do not currently suffer from acne, we can move directly to the treatment of scarring.

Acne Scar Treatment: SmartXide DOT Laser

The best treatment of acne scarring is the use of the SmartXide DOT Laser. This laser treatment creates thousands of microscopic perforations, immediately tightening the skin and stimulating new collagen growth. This treatment is highly effective in improving the skin’s texture, eliminating visible scarring and spots, and evening the skin tone.

Our expert skin specialists will adjust the laser’s settings to tailor the treatment for your skin type and problem areas. Adjustments to the laser can be made throughout the procedure to accurately treat specific areas such as scars on the cheeks versus scarring in more sensitive areas around the mouth. This laser treatment revitalizes the skin and allows it to heal more rapidly and achieve faster results.

At Thrive Anti-aging and Aesthetic Center, we offer specialized laser and cosmetic medicine treatments. Dr. Adam Maddox, and our highly experienced staff bring more than a decade of experience in the field of laser light treatments and cosmetic dermatology. Our treatment programs are entirely customized to each individual after we begin treatment with an hour skin consultation.

Naturopathic Physician Portland: Dr. Maddox Discusses Skin Rejuvenation and Anti-Aging

26 November 2010, admin on the topic of Anti Aging News, Laser Fractional Resurfacing Portland

The definition of beauty has evolved over the years and as beauty trends come and go, one constant seems to ring true, we all want to age beautifully. Aging beautifully is a holistic approach to taking care of one’s internal and external health. Internal health includes regular exercise, eating healthy food, drinking water, and mental/spiritual rejuvenation. External health is the way we dress and carry ourselves, keeping our skin healthy, and taking steps to care for our outward appearance.

No matter how much we work out, eat right, and use sunscreen, we will see the visible signs of aging, sun damage, and loss of collagen as we age. There is a way to correct this damage. The path to younger, healthier looking skin comes in two phases, a corrective phase and the preventative phase. The corrective phase includes treatments like laser fractional resurfacing for fine lines and collagen building, and age spot treatments to create a glowing, even skin tone.

The preventative phase includes treatments that can make patients look ten years younger than they do today. The advancements in treatments like fillers and laser skin rejuvenation slow down the visible signs of aging and can actually reverse the aging process. Not only do you have the ability to correct damage, you have the ability to reverse it, and look as young and fresh as you did years ago.

At Thrive Aesthetic & Anti-Aging, we believe that our approach to beauty and medical spa treatments is to help our client’s age beautifully, in a natural way. As the standards of beauty have evolved, so has the oversaturation of procedures that leave women looking unnatural and over-plumped. Our goal is to work with the beauty of each person and enhance their features in a natural way. Client’s who invest in anti-aging treatments and procedures leave our office feeling refreshed, rejuvenated, and renewed.
