Wrinkles are our skin’s natural response to aging and while light laugh lines may be charming, deep creases and furrows are aspects of age you no longer have to settle for. An incredible amount of new research about the causes of wrinkles has become accessible over the last decade, and dramatic improvements in injectable fillers have helped tens of millions of men and women look and feel more beautiful. Dr. Maddox and his team at Thrive offer a number of wrinkle reduction services designed to help you look as beautiful as you feel.
Botox Cosmetic is a protein derived from botulism toxin that is most commonly injected underneath the skin in order to minimize or smooth out lines and wrinkles on the face. It was first introduced to the medical community in 1989 as a treatment for eye muscle disorders and was eventually approved for cosmetic use after much successful testing. These procedures use a small amount of diluted botulinum toxin that enables controlled weakening of muscles.
Botox works to relax the contraction of muscles by blocking nerve impulses. The result is muscles that can no longer contract, and so the wrinkles relax and soften. It usually takes two to four days to see cosmetic improvement and the effects tend to last from three to six months. While most patients require additional treatments as wrinkles and lines begin to reappear, after each injection the wrinkles return less severe than before as the muscles are trained to relax.
Restylane is the number one wrinkle filler in the United States. Restylane is made using naturally occurring hyaluronic acid, the same substance that already exists in the body. Restylane works quickly, adding volume and fullness to the skin to correct moderate to severe wrinkles and folds and is most commonly used in the nasolabial folds, or the lines from your nose to the corners of your mouth.
Because Restylane maintains its shape using the body’s own moisture, it increasingly binds to the body’s own water molecules over time, which produces lasting results as the skin ages and loses moisture. In a clinical study of laugh lines (nasolabial folds), at least 95% of patients treated with Restylane continued to see results for up to 18 months after initial treatment when patients returned for a follow-up treatment at 4.5 or nine months.
Juvéderm can be used by a licensed physician to fill moderate to severe parentheses lines, marionette lines, and vertical lines between the nose and upper lip, with results lasting up to one year. Some preparations of Juvéderm also include lidocaine, which reduces the minor discomfort that some people feel during the process. Like Restylane, Juvéderm is a hyaluronic acid gel used to fill lines and wrinkles around the mouth. Hyaluronic acid binds to and absorbs water in the dermis (the layer of skin between the epidermis, the outer layer of skin that we see every day, and the connective tissue inside our bodies). As we age, our bodies don’t produce as much hyaluronic acid as before, leading to shrinking and volume in the dermis, which appear as wrinkles in the epidermis.
If you’d like to start 2012 looking as beautiful as you feel, contact Dr. Maddox and his team at Thrive Portland to schedule an initial consultation.
As we age, the hair on our body looses width, strength and color. This natural process can happen to your eyelashes exactly the same way it happens to the hair on your head. Eyelash hypotrichosis is the medical name for having inadequate or not enough lashes. Other factors like an over or under active Thyroid, a poor diet, or cosmetics with harsh chemicals can contribute to the depletion in the number and thickness of one’s eyelashes.
Many women try to cover up their thinning lashes with extensions, gobs of mascara, and other tricks. This can actually contribute to the deterioration of your eyelashes. LATISSE® solution is a prescription treatment for hypotrichosis used to grow eyelashes, making them longer, thicker and darker. LATISSE® works from the inside out by increasing the growth cycle (anagen) phase of your eyelash hair cycle. As we age, our hair growth cycle slows and sometimes we need some additional help.
Latisse is an easy, reasonably priced, and low risk solution but it must be prescribed by your doctor. Latisse is applied one time per day at the base of your lashes. Once you begin using Latisse, you’ll first see changes in length. Then, gradually, you’ll notice more thickness and darkness in your lashes. Results vary but we can provide an estimate during our consultation.
Latisse is an ophthalmic solution and if any solution gets into the eye, it will not cause harm so it’s relatively risk-free. The most common side effects including an itching sensation in the eyes or a bit of redness. If you are interested in more information about Latisse, contact us to set-up your consultation with Dr. Maddox. He can provide more information about Latisse, how to apply it, and what results you should expect to see based on the current state of your lashes.
Wouldn’t it be nice to wake up with full lashes that look natural and healthy? Call us today to set up your Latisse treatment consultation at 503-241-3579 or visit our website for more information about Thrive Aesthetic and Anti-Aging Center. In July, we have a special offer when you buy two kits of Latisse you will get the 3rd for free!
Getting rid of stubborn fat can be frustrating and put a damper on self-esteem. It’s no wonder liposuction is the number one sought after cosmetic surgery in the country. But what if you could remove fat and improve your body’s contour without undergoing a surgical procedure?
The newest in lipotherapy offers a safe and non-invasive way to help you look slimmed and revitalized without the need for heavy anesthesia or recovery time. Lipotherapy is a non-surgical fat reduction treatment that uses an injection to dissolve fat deposits that are not affected by diet and exercise. LipoDissolve® is one such revolutionary treatment used at Thrive that has received much media attention and interest from our patients.
LipoDissolve® consists of phosphatidlycholine (PPC) and deoxycholate, both of which are naturally occurring substances within the body. PPC facilitates fat transport through the cell membrane and is most commonly derived from soybeans.
How Does it Work?
A series of microinjections are delivered to the treatable area and the two compounds work together to break up fat cells causing the fat to liquefy in the body. An inflammatory response allows debris clean up and tissue retraction. This fat and cellular debris is then picked up naturally by the body and eliminated through the normal metabolic pathways. New collagen is then deposited in the area, causing denser, firmer skin.
What Areas Can be Treated?
Ideal treatment areas include lower eye pads, chin, jowls, cheeks, abdomen, upper/lower back, upper arms, hips, thighs, knees, buttocks, and love handles. The frequency of treatment depends on the body area and how much fat needs to be dissolved. Typically, patients will return every 2-4 weeks for 4-6 treatments.
Thrive Aesthetic and Anti-Aging Center is Oregon’s leading authority on LipoDissolve, as well as other non-surgical fat removal procedures such as Mesotherapy and Med Sculpt. Since 2004, our center has performed hundreds of treatments to help our clients look and feel their best.

Wrinkles are our skin’s natural response to aging and while light laugh lines may be charming, deep creases and furrows are aspects of age you no longer have to settle for. An incredible amount of new research about the causes of wrinkles has become accessible over the last decade, and in turn, dramatic improvements in laser technology and injectable fillers have helped tens of millions of men and women look and feel more beautiful.
The Basics
Wrinkles are the lines and creases that form in your skin, and may be especially noticeable around the eyes, mouth and neck. With age, skin becomes less elastic, drier and contains less fat in the deeper tissues – all of which lead to loose, sagging skin. Wrinkling may also be caused by a number of other factors, including:
Prevention
You can’t control all of the factors that cause wrinkles (like aging), but you can control some. Taking care of your overall health greatly affects the health of your skin. A nutritious diet, plenty of water and regular exercise serve as the basics. A skincare routine that includes a daily sunscreen of at least SPF 15 is also a necessary step in preventing early wrinkling. Ultraviolet light breaks down your skin’s connective tissue. Without the supportive connective tissue, your skin loses its strength and flexibility.
Some reparative therapies actually work to prevent wrinkles as well. Botox for example, helps patients avoid the inevitable furrows that result from years of scrunching and frowning when used starting in the early 20s and 30s.
A plethora of FDA-approved devices have shown great improvement in reducing wrinkles in the epidermis and collagen building in the dermis layer of the skin. Here are just a few examples of popular effective treatments.
Skin Titan and Laser Genesis
Both the Titan and Laser Genesis are light-based alternatives to plastic surgery. Titan is the first light-based solution for tightening skin on the face and body. It emits a pure infrared light to reverse the signs of aging without damaging the surface of the skin. The treatment also works by stimulating long-term collagen building which helps to tone, lift and firm the skin. The Laser Genesis uses a pulsed-light system used to treat a range of specific issues including wrinkles, fine lines, redness and scarring.
DOT Therapy
Dermal Optical Thermolysis, or DOT, is a fractional laser resurfacing treatment that addresses wrinkles, sagging, sun damage, and discoloration among others skin issues. It works by creating thousands of microscopic perforations that immediately tighten the skin and stimulate new collagen growth. DOT is known as a highly effective treatment in improving the skin’s texture and fighting lines and wrinkles.
Dermal Fillers – Restylane
Dermal fillers are injected under the skin to restore volume and fullness and to correct facial wrinkles. Restylane is a natural substance that already exists in the human body. The hyaluronic acid in Restylane increasingly binds to the body’s own water molecules over time, which produces lasting results as the skin ages. Unlike collagen, Restylane is free from animal proteins and provides a truly natural way to achieve a youthful look.

Nearly all of us have experienced acne at some point in our lives, in fact, it affects nearly 80% of the human population. While acne typically begins in adolescence with hormonal changes, adults can commonly experience the symptoms as well. Acne can be painful, embarrassing and even leave scarring – all of which can affect one’s self esteem. In order to better understand acne, let’s explore the causes, symptoms and effective treatments.
What is Acne?
Acne is localized skin inflammation as a result of overactive sebaceous glands at the base of hair follicles. The sebaceous glands are triggered by the hormone androgen. When this hormone level increases, the sebaceous glands release sebum or oil. This oil normally lubricates and protects the skin, but under certain circumstances, cells that are close to the openings of the oil glands, block the openings. If pores are clogged, sebum is trapped beneath the skin, causing whiteheads and blackheads.
Acne typically appears on the face, neck, chest, back and shoulders, which are the areas of skin with the largest number of functional oil glands. There are different levels of acne ranging from milder comedonal (blackheads and whiteheads) to moderate, pustular, and on to severe cystic acne. In many cases, several or all of these levels of acne can be present on an individual simultaneously.
What Causes Acne?
Acne is rarely caused by just one factor, and may include a combination of the following:
How to Treat Acne?
There are a few different approaches to treating acne and/or acne scarring. If a patient is currently dealing with acne, our treatment plan begins with a thorough consultation to understand the root cause of the acne. From there, a number of treatments may be prescribed including topical products, light therapies, photodynamic therapies and internal hormone treatments.
Light Therapy
The use of light therapy has been shown to drastically reduce acne-causing bacteria in the pores and is safe, effective and easy. At Thrive, we use two major light therapy treatments to improve the skin and rid it of the effects of acne.
Omnilux light therapy is an FDA-approved system that uses high-intensity, narrow-band blue light for treating acne. Omnilux uses LEDs, as opposed to fluorescent tubes or bulbs and because no laser is involved, there is no heat, pain or swelling and no recovery time! Improvements to the skin are usually visible after only a few treatments.
Photodynamic Therapy
Photodynamic therapy (“PDT”) uses a unique combination of light-sensitive medication and Omnilux light therapy to affect changes in the skin surface, and help your body regenerate healthier skin. A photosensitizing topical treatment is applied to the affected area and is then exposed to light that activates its properties. This treatment reduces skin oiliness and minimizes the appearance of pore size while improving skin texture.
Once the patient’s skin is healed from current acne breakouts and breakouts have been kept at bay, the acne scarring can then be treated. If patients do not currently suffer from acne, we can move directly to the treatment of scarring.
Acne Scar Treatment: SmartXide DOT Laser
The best treatment of acne scarring is the use of the SmartXide DOT Laser. This laser treatment creates thousands of microscopic perforations, immediately tightening the skin and stimulating new collagen growth. This treatment is highly effective in improving the skin’s texture, eliminating visible scarring and spots, and evening the skin tone.
Our expert skin specialists will adjust the laser’s settings to tailor the treatment for your skin type and problem areas. Adjustments to the laser can be made throughout the procedure to accurately treat specific areas such as scars on the cheeks versus scarring in more sensitive areas around the mouth. This laser treatment revitalizes the skin and allows it to heal more rapidly and achieve faster results.
At Thrive Anti-aging and Aesthetic Center, we offer specialized laser and cosmetic medicine treatments. Dr. Adam Maddox, and our highly experienced staff bring more than a decade of experience in the field of laser light treatments and cosmetic dermatology. Our treatment programs are entirely customized to each individual after we begin treatment with an hour skin consultation.

There is no question that tattoos have become more mainstream. In fact, a 2008 study showed 25% of adults 30-39 and 32% of adults 25-29 have at least one tattoo. And while increasing visibility may mean more acceptance, a recent CNN news feature revealed there are mixed opinions when it comes to the workplace. Whether you feel like you’ve outgrown that tattoo you got when you were 18 or you want to present a more professional appearance in order to get your dream job, laser tattoo removal may be your solution.
Tattoo removal in the past often required surgery and/or skin grafts. These procedures were not only painful but often left patients scarred. Thrive Aesthetic and Anti-Aging Center offers the latest laser tattoo removal technology. RevLITE laser tattoo removal treatment targets the ink while leaving healthy skin cells intact, therefore reducing scar tissue formation. The relatively new Q-Switched lasers, found in RevLITE, remove tattoos with light energy that is absorbed into the tattoo ink, breaking the ink into tiny particles that then can be removed by the body’s natural filtering system. This revolutionary new system can remove many types of tattoos – professional, amateur, traumatic and surgical tattoos. A typical tattoo may take 6-10 treatments to remove. Factors that affect the number of treatments include color of tattoo, color of your skin, type of ink used, as well as the size and location of the tattoo.

You’ve probably heard just about everyone from celebrities to your neighbors and family members talk about Botox. That’s because Botox has become the most popular non-invasive aesthetic medical procedure performed worldwide. But what is it?
Botox is a protein derived from botulism toxin that is most commonly injected underneath the skin in order to minimize or smooth out lines and wrinkles on the face. It was first introduced to the medical community in 1989 as a treatment for eye muscle disorders and was eventually approved for cosmetic use after much successful testing. Botox works to relax the contraction of muscles by blocking nerve impulses. The result is muscles that can no longer contract, and so the wrinkles relax and soften. It usually takes two to four days to see cosmetic improvement and the effects tend to last from three to six months. While most patients require additional treatments as wrinkles and lines begin to reappear, after each injection the wrinkles return less severe as the muscles are trained to relax.
Many people think Botox is only used to repair already affected areas, but it is also used as a preventative therapy. Starting to use Botox in the late 20s or early 30s actually helps patients avoid the inevitable furrows that result from years of scrunching and frowning. Treatments do not require anesthesia and usually take just a few minutes to perform.
Unfortunately, the popularity of Botox treatments has encouraged some physicians and non-medical professionals without extensive training to offer these treatments in order to capture a percentage of the market. A proper Botox treatment experience should always start with a consultation where any and all questions or concerns can be discussed so the patient feels well-informed. In addition, a follow-up appointment should be scheduled after treatment, especially with new patients. Botox has been proven to work wonders for thousands of people, but every patient should be treated individually and with care.
At Thrive Aesthetic and Anti-Aging Center, we pride ourselves on offering experienced advice and assisting people with any questions related to Botox, medical spa treatments, hormone replacement, and/or medical weight loss. We insist on beginning every relationship with an hour consultation to discuss our treatment options in more depth. Our team of expert medical professionals is available to offer their insight, answer your questions, and be an informational resource for our current and potential clients.
